Imagine high energy contemporary Christian music… Add a variety of active games… Blend in a wild and crazy skit with a serious message… Drop it into a Small Group Environment… and that’s just the first 20 minutes!
Trinity is involved in a new type of Catechism experience: small groups of 4-6 young people in grades 6-9 connected to an impact adult involved in active learning as well as service projects and fellowship events.
Someone once said the longest journey of all is from the head to the heart.1 We believe the faith isn’t a head trip. It’s a heart trip. We believe it’s not what you know that counts. It’s who you know, and we’re introducing our young people to God’s amazing love in Jesus Christ in a way that moves the faith from the head to the heart. It’s no longer a read-it-and-learn-it process, but a do-it-and-live-it small group process, guided by an adult, and blessed by God!
How does it work? Simple, really. We start out with a four-week long rotating schedule that looks like this:
- Week 1 Lessons in Large and Small Groups
- Week 2 Small Group Service / Fellowship Events
- Week 3 Lessons in Large and Small Groups
- Week 4 Adult Huddle (kids have the week off!)
Weeks 1 and 3 are scheduled the same. We start at 6:30 pm with 15 – 20 minutes of contemporary Christian music, a game (sometimes action-packed, sometimes quieter), and a devotional time. From there we move to a skit the kids put on that lays out the theme for the day. Pastor Bill spends the next 30 minutes expanding on the theme in his presentation. Then the kids break into their Small Groups for 30 minutes with their adult leader, scattering all over the building to share with one another their highs and lows for the week, review the presentation, plan/evaluate their 2nd Week activity, and spend time in prayer for one another. The group gathers back in the sanctuary for a brief closing with Pastor Bill. Everyone is dismissed at 8:00 pm.
Week 2 can be either a Service Project or a Fellowship Event. For Service Projects, we’ve had Small Groups involved in almost everything you can think of from picking up trash on Milwaukee Ave. to baking cookies for worship services to sorting clothing for foster kids to serving meals to the homeless to playing UNO at a group home and more. Our Fellowship events have been movies and a pizza, bowling, roller skating, game nights, miniature golfing, and whatever else they can come up with.
Week 4 is when the kids have the week off while the adults leading the program gather together in a Huddle, a Small Group of our own. We spend time in prayer, eating a meal together, talking about one another’s cares and concerns, and working on ways to keep the whole process fresh and alive for everyone involved.
Finally, the program runs for three years. We study the Lord’s Prayer, Baptism and Communion from the Catechism in year one. In year 2, we look at both the Old and New Testaments, and in year 3 we study the Ten Commandments and the Apostle’s Creed. Kids going into 6th grade start the program off and attend for 3 years so they get all three parts, Catechism I, Catechism II, and the Bible.
If you’d like more information, please feel free to call the church office (414-762-6626). We’d be glad to show you around our program and give you a feel for how God has been active in our lives through our Catechism Classes!
